How to Evaluate a Broker or Trading Platform Independently

Most platform reviews online are paid placements. That does not make them all wrong, but it does mean the reader carries the burden of verification. This checklist is the same one our editorial team applies internally.

It is deliberately mechanical. Each item produces either a documented finding or a documented gap, and gaps are as informative as findings.

1. Regulatory status, verified at the source

Every claim of regulation should be checked against the regulator's own public register, not against the platform's website. Confirm the exact legal entity name, the licence number, the permitted activities and which entity would hold your account given your country of residence.

Group structures matter. A brand may operate several entities under different regimes with materially different client protections, and the entity you contract with determines what applies to you.

2. Disclosure quality

Read the client agreement, the order execution policy, the risk warning and the complaints procedure. You are not looking for reassuring language; you are looking for specificity. Documents that state concrete thresholds, timelines and procedures indicate an operation that expects to be held to them.

  • Is the dealing model stated explicitly in writing?
  • Are margin call and close-out levels given as numbers?
  • Is there a defined complaints timeline and escalation route?
  • Is client money segregation described, and under which entity?

3. Cost transparency

Locate a consolidated schedule of all charges. If spreads, commissions, swaps and account fees live in four different places with different update dates, treat cost comparison as unreliable until confirmed with support in writing.

4. Platform and execution testing

Use a demo environment first, then a minimally funded live account if you proceed. Demo conditions rarely match live execution, so the small live test is where the real information is: fill quality, stop behaviour around news, platform stability during volatility.

Record everything. Fifty timestamped observations beat any number of forum opinions.

5. Support responsiveness

Before funding, send support three specific technical questions — margin close-out level, swap calculation method, withdrawal processing time. Judge the answers on precision and speed. Vague answers to precise questions are a finding.

6. The withdrawal process

Deposits are always easy. Withdrawals are the real test. Verify the documented processing time, the accepted methods, any fees and whether funds must return to the original funding source. Where possible, complete a small withdrawal early rather than waiting until the balance is meaningful.

7. Independent reputation signals

Weight regulator notices, court filings and detailed first-hand accounts above star ratings. Our own NordicFX review applies exactly these seven points and publishes both the confirmed findings and the areas where public documentation at nordic-fx.com did not answer the question.

Key takeaways

  • Verify licences on the regulator's register, never on the platform's own page
  • Specific disclosure documents indicate an operation prepared to be held to them
  • A small live test reveals what a demo account cannot
  • Test withdrawals early, while the balance is small
